The 1992-93 Zoo TV trek was a multimedia distraction that did take away from the performers themselves. Most people who said that weren’t paying attention they were looking for an excuse to slam U2 and didn’t notice that they actually sounded as good - if not better - than ever.Īs odd as it may seem, I actually felt the giant set and all of the effects helped focus attention on the band. The latter aspect received the most negative attention, as many critics felt the production overwhelmed the band and that they didn’t play well. The show started a little slowly, but it soon became a fine combination of stadium theatrics, varied and interesting setlist, and tight performances by the band. To my pleasant surprise, PopMart offered the best U2 experience I’d had. However, I didn’t initially plan to go to more than just U2’s May 1997 DC show I was open to the idea of additional dates, but I needed to see the concert first. When an act that I really care for hits the road, I plan to hit repeated dates five generally is a minimum, and the number may escalate dependent on the schedules. Actually, a December 1987 performance in Hampton Virginia came close to that level, but the others - a short set at the June 1986 Amnesty International benefit show, a 1987 DC stadium show, and two concerts during the 1992 Zoo TV tour - seemed enjoyable but unspectacular.Īlthough I loved the band, this history remained on my mind as the PopMart trek began. Prior to 1997, I’d seen U2 five times over a six-year span, and though I liked those concerts, I never felt the band lived up to their reputation as a terrific live act. During the two North American legs of the tour, I took in eight shows, and I thoroughly enjoyed them. Many thought the show seemed too hung up on the technical aspects of the production and didn’t bother to accentuate the music. U2’s much-maligned 1997 tour - that also extended into a few 1998 dates in South America, Australia, Japan and South Africa - sold millions of tickets but wasn’t regarded as up to the band’s normal standards, both commercially and professionally.
